Artist's Statement  ::
A contemporary painter whom I met speaks of great paintings having a strong element of mystery: there is always more for a viewer to look at and for. It is this element of mystery I strive for in my own work. The unpredictable flow of transparent liquid on paper, and the arbitrary intensification of color where the liquid pools on the paper when it buckles from dampness, combine to produce complex and intriguing images—images full of mystery that seduce viewers and draw them closely into the works.

My approach to painting minimizes the use of brushes and leverages the liquidity of water-based paint and paint combinations (e.g., one color or some ink dropped onto a pool of another color or into wet areas on paper) to create unpredictable colors and organic imagery. Thus the essential nature of paint with its color, flow and dynamism is demonstrated, which is a source of excitement and inspiration for me as an artist.

Often the goals of watermedia painting are control and detail, and in fact, I began the work I am now doing to counter my own tendency (in watercolor, oils, acrylics, and printmaking) to tighten up my work and control every square inch. Now, besides thoroughly enjoying myself, one of my goals in this work is to demonstrate the viability of paint (and especially watermedia) as an exciting medium for contemporary art and one that is still most worthy of continued exploration.
